Grankulla City Hall Quarters

The proposal enhances the Town Hall site and completes the centre of Kauniainen through a carefully balanced combination of retail, offices, public functions, and diverse housing types. By combining increased urban activity with the preservation and strengthening of the existing landscape, the project reinterprets Kauniainen’s identity as a contemporary garden city.

Commercial functions are concentrated along Grankullavägen, reinforcing the town’s commercial and administrative core, while new public spaces add a more intimate and welcoming character to the centre. A new garden street, created by extending the axis of Tunnelvägen through the site, forms the central organizing element of the plan. Designed as a shared space prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists, it connects the station, the town centre, and Villa Junghans through a sequence of green and urban public spaces.

The development is organized into five flexible residential blocks that can accommodate a mix of building typologies, creating architectural, social, and spatial diversity. The arrangement of the blocks generates a meandering public green corridor, Kauniainen’s new garden street, which links neighbourhoods, supports phased development, and strengthens north-south connections across the town.
